11/21/05: I heard about a website that honored a young woman's passing by asking for donations to support a cause that was close to her heart (and mine too). I e-mailed her parents to let them know how moved I was by their website, and to thank them for their incredible generosity.
11/22/05: I participated in MoveOn's "Face America" photo petition to oppose the so-called "reverse Robin Hood" budget proposal before Congress that would cut services for the poor and give tax breaks to the rich. I took a photo of myself with a message opposing the cuts and submitted it to MoveOn, which they will distribute to every member of Congress before the final vote on the budget proposal.
11/23/05: I found out about a tragedy that impacted many people close to me, and I took personal actions to support those who were affected.
11/24/05: Similar to 11/11, I decided that my housemates and I were wasting a lot of energy by frequently leaving some house lights on during the night. I have committed to checking the house before I go to bed each night to turn off any unnecessary lights.
11/25/05: I went furniture shopping, and decided to purchase all of my furniture from an IKEA store. IKEA makes an effort to be socially and environmentally responsible by being efficient with natural resources (using fewer raw materials and creating minimal waste) and by setting environmental and labor standards that all of their suppliers must adhere to.
11/26/05: Following up on my action from 9/29, I once again bought gas from a BP station that was next to an Exxon station. I wrote to both of them to let them know about my commitment to only buy gas from the most environmentally friendly oil companies, and also to let them know that I was publicizing this commitment on my website.
11/27/05: I read the firsthand account of a woman who was assaulted on a Metro train in D.C. on the 10th of this month. I was appalled at the shameful handling of this situation by Metro employees, and so I wrote to the Metro's customer service department asking them to consider implementing her suggestions for how to improve Metro security.
>> Update: Surprisingly enough, I received a response from Metro Customer Service the next morning, letting me know that the woman's suggestions had already been forwarded to the Transit Police for their review.
Contribution by Mike M.: "My girlfriend Carrie and I purchased canvas bags from our local grocery store (Harris Teeter) to be used instead of plastic bags. With these two bags and a few smaller canvas bags that Carrie already had, we no longer have to bring any plastic bags home from the grocery store."
